Using Expect and if

Hi there,

I'm trying to get an expect script to recognize a specific shell prompt and then execute some simples commands when it detects that particular prompt.

So say I log in to a box, and the shell prompt is

abc#

it executes commands

and if my script logs in to another box, it would be a different shell prompt like:

def#

How do i get my expect script to recognize that? Reason being is because i need to login as root to execute these commands and the prompts are different from server to server.

Any help would be great.

You'll need to change root's .profile on the different servers and change the PS1 env variable. You can display the hostname in the path.

for ksh:
Code:
PS1="`whoami`@`hostname`# "
export PS1

for bash:
Code:
export PS1="`whoami`@hostname`# "

Thanks for the quick reply but am not sure if that's what I'm looking for... basically the root environments on the different machines will have different prompts... i need the expect script to recognize the different prompts and execute specific commands for that specific prompt. This is what I have but I don't know how to write it as an if statement.

if the prompt = x then run this command, else run this

Here is the code i have so far and can't find anything on this anywhere:

spawn ssh [lindex $argv 0]
send "su -\r"
expect "Password:"
send "password\r"
expect "#"
send "su - root\r"
send "\r"

expect "hostname1-root#"
send "command\r"
send "command\r"
send "exit/r"
send "exit/r"
exit

expect "hostname2-root#"
send "command\r"
send "totally different command\r"
send "exit/r"
send "exit/r"
send "exit/r"
exit
expect eof

Just check with expect('# ') or some other similarity between the command prompts.

You can have expect check the environment variable. Prompts are designated by $PS1. I'd try and check it that way.

This is what I have so far:

expect {
if { "echo $PS1" == "root" } {
send "uname -a\r"
send "fw printlic\r"
send "exit/r"
send "exit/r"
exit

} else {
send "uname -a\r"
send "cplic print\r"
send "exit/r"
send "exit/r"
send "exit/r"
exit
}
fi
}

I couldn't find any other examples online for the syntax so I'm probably fubar'ing it. Can anyone help? Smilie
