How to extend disk space?

Hi All,

I am working with a virtual machine of redhat and hard-disk is 100g in all, and the system free size is about 60g.
while the problem is when i run command: df -h, the root path seems already full. So i am wondering, is there any command i can work with to extend space for mounted volume /?
Code:
df -h
-------------------------------------------------------------
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda3 16G 15G 0 100% /
tmpfs 1.9G 124K 1.9G 1% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1 291M 36M 240M 14% /boot

Thank you all in advance.

Thanks,
Ivy

You may be able to grow /dev/sda3 if you left unused disk space at the end of the /dev/sda3 partition.

A better option would be to rebuild your RHEL VM, use LVM and place /var on a separate logical volume and filesystem. With your current disk layout and filesystems, the root filesystem will always be prone to filling up.

Any way to extend the root partition

Thank you for your reply.
I know your point, as the var is included in root partition. While, if i don't want to re-install my vm, if there anyway for me to extend the file system for root partition?

add result for fdisk:
--------------------------------------------------
Code:
fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 107.4 GB, 107374182400 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 13054 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00053431

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 39 307200 83 Linux
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2 39 553 4128768 82 Linux swap / Solaris
Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda3 553 2611 16534528 83 Linux

Thanks a lot,
Ivy
