Question career Advice

Hi all,

I need a career Advice.

About myself -- I have 2 years of work experience as a System Administrator (Linux and Solaris). I am Sun Certified System Administrator on Solaris 10.0 currently working in a MNC.

As for career growth, I am doing 3 year MBA course from distance learning, currently in first year. Will get an MBA degree by 2010, will be having total 5 years of work exp then.

I have a pretty good hand on shell scripting and I am still working to get it better. I don't want to be limited to only system administration. I know its a vast field but still....

Now, so as to boost my career, I can think of two options - Oracle DBA on Solaris (as it requires Shell Scripting) and Veritas Volume Manager.

I want to know at least basic knowledge of Oracle DBA and seek Oracle certification as I have seen many job openings for Unix+Oracle.

Can you guyz please help me out ? Am I thinking the right way ?

All suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks in Adv.

You say you are doing an MBA I'm puzzled as to why you still want to pursue a technical career as an engineer by taking sun and oracle courses. Sure there are engineers with MBA around but I've also met engineers with just diplomas and just a decade or two of experience so personally I find those that sport MBA while still in technical is a bit of waste.

If you want to remain in technical then pursue your passion by getting all the required certifications.

If you want to climb the corporate ladder at some point you will need to "let go" of technical.

just my thoughts.

I go with sparcguy ...
Sorry if this is something offending you .. I knew many of whom I know doing MBA just to add up to the list and doing MBA in recognized institutes ( I don't want to list them ... ) alone would be beneficial with respect to the course and course value.

I don't mean to say don't do that. Most of them who did their business administration after engineering do seldom end up with technical job roles

I have a similar technical skill set, SCSA 8 & delayed doing v10. I'm aslo a MBA undergraduate however...

I'ts pointless doing a MBA (2nd & 3rd years) unless your already woirking in a managment position (whihch I am) as you will learn absolutely nothing - it works on applying the techniques on your own work

I already have Veritas VxVMFS training, though fewer firms are using them in favour of SAN's (or maybe the cheaper NAS)

Laslty you will need PERL to go with shell scripting & make yourself aware of MYSQL whilst your going through Oracle, to gain a awareness of SQL as well as SQL on *NIX

think CBT

I somewhat disagree. MBA's are worth something on a resume in the long run but someone with a few years experience typically don't reach for a masters that quickly. Also, there are all sorts of MBA's. Imagine someone with an understanding of finance with skills in development. Companies pay plenty for that experience.
