Well, no movie deals for him yet, so yep, he is not one of the more well known characters. However, because of his total omnipotence, most people who are familiar with Marvel Comics will have heard of him.
He was last seen (I think) in connection with an artifact known as the the Infinity Gauntlet which gives the owner complete control over space, time, matter, energy, thought, etc. But still this was not enough to have any effect on this guy, except that it did attract his attention.
His corresponding character in the DC universe would be the Spectre. And there was a DC/Marvel cross-over where they paired up. (Bear in mind that Stan Lee did not create the Spectre and thus the Spectre is simply not as cool.)
