Question Career blues!!!

Hi all,

Just writing to know how to approach the situation. I am currently with 2+ exp in a support environment in Unix..mostly on the application side..have not done any Sysadmin work..

My interest is to move towards Unix admin or towards Storage/Networking side..But the problem is that my Company seems to be not preferring people with limited exp to take admin tasks..Not sure how i will learn though...Thats another point..

Cant switch companies immediately for personal reasons..Any idea how can I learn admin stuff and prove myself capable of handling bigger challenges...Any ideas are most welcome....

Regards...

i used to be in application support and did a lot of shell scripting because of it ... when i decided to look for an actual sysadmin job --- i convinced the guy who hired me that there is no way i can be a good scripter without being able to know the system commands i needed to get the scripts to work properly ...

i beat out more than a few applicants for the job i interviewed for by showing my prospective employer that i understood Unix better because of my shell scripting work as compared to just having a year or two of junior sysadmin work that mostly relegates you to the minor and mundane work in most shops ...

it also helped that i can actually troubleshoot problems quicker because scripting lets me go through log files faster than if i had to manually read them line by line ...

anyways, good luck!
