Hi!
Why do you need UNIX/Linux ? How are you going to use it ? Do you need it for home use ? or for servers ? And how are your UNIX knowledges ?
I use FreeBSD as desktop OS, but It's not the best choice, especialy if you are mainly oriented on multimedia applications. If you want something easy to use, I'll recomand you Xandros of Fedora Core...

If you're looking for FreeWindows XP, you're going to be very disappointed. It's more powerful an OS, yes, but It's Not Windows.

I think OP is looking for a UNIX emulator, something like cygwin, which can be run on windows platform, give it a try, you can do a lot with cygwin, with hundreds of GNU tools available to download:

http://www.cygwin.com/

Out of interest, does any body know the full form of PS used for footnotes Smilie
