I've used both Puppy Linux and Fatdog64 (gotta love the names), booting from CD, or PXE server. Both have a web browser and rdp client. In the right server environment, you can pretty much eliminate MS from the desktop.

I have been in IT for a long time, the resistance to changing from MS to Open Source is not due to anything other than the will to implement it and the cost of training the staff.

I work for a large German multi-national, most of the desktops in Germany are SUSE. But in almost all the other countries MS is the defacto standard, this won't be changed on grounds of staff training costs.
