IT jobs/careers without formal qualifications.

I have a couple of job interviews for entry-level IT roles coming up in the next week, one as a 'Capacity Analyst' with an IT services provider, the other as a 'Technical Support Officer' in the public sector.

Other than training in standard "office applications" as part of a general business administration certificate, I do not have any formal training in IT, but have been studying extensively over the past 12 months from books at the library and have recently started including a "reading list" in my CV of books and exercises I have completed in the area of UNIX shell scripting, SQL (especially MySQL 5) and general networking concepts, as well as downloading Express Editions of vendors products like MS SQL Server and Oracle 10g, and completing vendor tutorials.

I would be interested to know how many members have established satisfying careers in IT support roles without formal qualifications.

Would those members in more senior IT roles be hesitant to work with someone who lacked formal training, or are references and demonstrated capabilities and enthusiasm more important?

I concentrate on experience and attitude in my hiring decisions through the years. Formal training (including cert and degree programs) help a candidate, but it is not the key in my decisions.
Perhaps see if you can help a school, local community (library, senior center), or a local business. Hiring managers want to know about tangible results.
So, in addition to whatever you are reading, get some real practical experience. Write a grading program for a teacher, upgrade memory & clean up viruses on computers at the local senior center, clean up mailing list data for your local church. (I think you get the idea.) These demonstrate the usage of the theory.

It really depends on the work environment. I think I did fairly well without extensive qualifications but then, I'm in a small rural business, where technically capable server personnel are pretty rare; they didn't really have much infrastructure before I built it, which gave me a chance to prove myself by finding and solving needs...

I'd agree with joeyg, it is mainly about experience.
I was lucky and simply got noticed coding when I was bored.. Working in a call centre environment!
From that I did 3 years of database development and administration as well as software development and other tasks such as MIS.
The only other thing I can suggest is to REALLY know exactly what you are talking about, so many people try to lie about what they know or about the extent of their knowledge. If the employer asks you a question you cannot answer that would more than likely be the end of the interview.

Thanks guys! I attended both interviews last week. For the Capacity Analyst role, they were satisfied that I had the technical skills (MS Excel, mostly) from my CV and the interview was more about finding a 'fit' for their current team and making sure the applicant was stable and committed to staying with the organisation (they are a fairly large IT services provider and looking to make a substantial investment in training the right applicant). There were more questions at the interview for the public sector Technical Support Officer role about specific tasks which I had undertaken with vendor software packages. By way of interest/comparison, here are portions of the job advertisements for there respective roles. Capacity Analyst:

This newly created role will suit someone with advanced Excel skills from a reporting background. Experience with Capacity Monitoring data would be highly regarded but is not essential. As part of a regional team, you will be required to contribute to our success through the following: * Monitor automated data collection processes and escalate failures to technical teams * Ensure that data is processed through standard processes in a timely manner. * Produce reports on various platforms for various clients throughout the APJ Region and report in a timely manner to the relevant parties. * Process alerts of predicted capacity threshold breaches and assign to appropriate Service Provider Groups, monitor their progress and escalate where necessary * Review and approve change requests to ensure that the capacity management team is aware of changes related to capacity constraints.
