I stand corrected... just downloaded and read the following... [0801.4031] Distant future of the Sun and Earth revisited

it looks like the previously held view that the rate at which the sun loses mass during the transitional into the Red Giant Phase has now been called into question. I have not studied stellar evolution in a while and apparently a 2008 paper has revisited the concept for the Sun.

Apologies.

As a red giant, the Sun will lose roughly 30% of its mass, so, without tidal effects, the Earth will move to an orbit 1.7 AU (250,000,000 km) from the Sun when the star reaches it maximum radius. The planet was therefore initially expected to escape envelopment by the expanded Sun's sparse outer atmosphere, though most, if not all, remaining life would have been destroyed by the Sun's increased luminosity (peaking at about 5000 times its present level).[52] A 2008 simulation indicates that Earth's orbit will decay due to tidal effects and drag, causing it to enter the red giant Sun's atmosphere and be vaporized.[58]

Yeah, i believe that the world will end as scientists succeed to simulate a black hole. It will be as good as the real thing.

Hm, to really really explain some of the oddities we observe nowadays i suppose the world as we know it is just a simulation on an alien kids palmtop for its class "Applied Futility and Related Nonsense 101".

Therefore the most probable end of the world will be the simulation program stopping with "Integer overrun in line 185 724 637. Process aborted.".

I call this scenario the "absolutely biggest crunch".

On a more semantic observation: the "end of the word" - is probably a whitespace. ;-))

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice
