Amazingly informative poll.....

I would have never guess that 85% of people who responded to the poll either never or rarely use their mobile to access the Internet.

This was a big surprise to me, as someone who uses their mobile to access the net every day, even checking prices while shopping by searching ebay and other sources while in the store looking at an item.

Well, I still think if data charges are flat on a reasonably unlimited basis, much more people will be surfing on the road. I think the rate is still high at the moment, at a price tag of least 2-3 times of the cost compared with residential broadband, not everyone would consider it sufficiently attractive.

Not everybody would consider that extra mobility is worth the extra bucks paid. But I think the case of ubiquity of cell phones today tells us this will change. 20 years ago nobody would mind the hindrance without phone access on the road, but now nearly everybody owns a cell phone and it is now considered anti-social if a person does not have a cell phone.

It's just the time hasn't come yet.

I still remember 10 years ago when I was still in high school it was an offence to bring cell phone to school, and it would be subject to confiscation if discovered (warnings issued and parents will be asked to come to school to get it back). However, it appears like today it is acceptable to carry one provided it does not ring in class.

As I recall, I pay around 9 USD a month for bundled services that include a few hundred SMS messages and 30 or 40 hours of GPRS Internet access per month.

Maybe GPRS is much more expensive elsewhere??

Well, I needed to pay around 2 USD for 100KBytes when I first tried visiting a few sites on a 3G phone. And that was just a few sites!

Wow! That is outrageous! I thought I was paying too much for a few dollars a month for 30 - 40 hours unlimited GPRS. Compared to you, I am getting it almost for free, if I stay under the hours of usage.

Now I am looking for an inexpensive unlimited GPRS package, because I would like to stay connected via mobile anytime I am away from a computer.

I use my PDA to access news stories mostly when surfing. I also read twitter from my cell.

I use the Internet on my mobile for many tasks, including:
  • Normal Email
  • Read Headline News
  • Read Breaking RSS News Feeds
  • Check and Compare Prices when Shopping
  • Download Maps (related to GPS)
  • Read, Reply and Moderate Forums
  • Monitor Server Stats
  • Review Server Alerts (Exception Conditions)
  • SSH into Server if Emergency

If there is a free WiFi hotspot in range, I use that; otherwise, I use GPRS.

I think I use my E61 for Internet much more than for actually talking on the phone or SMS! (FWIW: I also send between 200-300 SMS per month.)

Speaking of SMS, I get critical server alerts on my mobile via SMS using an email-to-SMS gateway.
