Unex

Has anyone worked on unix projects where they see unix mis-spelled as unex or unyx in the workplace?

Honestly no.
Not even Lunix, my favourite for heterogeneous landscapes.

I have never seen "unex". I have seen it misspelled a couple of times as "eunuchs", and I have seen cases where two UNIX systems were described as "unices".

Nearest I get is gerp. I'm forever typing it. I don't know why.

Well, it's much cooler than plain grep :P.

(I do the same thing so often I actually aliased it).

This is because latin nouns ending in "-<vowel>-x" are of the third declension (consonantic) and the nominativus pluralis is "-(i)ces". For instance: "vortex"-> "vortices", "codex" -> "codices", etc..

At least this is the correct plural, whereas one can often see "forae" as a plural of "forum". This wrong because neutral words in the second (o-) declension have the ending "-a" in the nominativus pluralis, therefore "fora".

I once was called by someone from a helpdesk if I knew something about "the unix". I then acknowledged that I was indeed somewhat versed in "the unix" and that I could probably be of assistance..
