Error Alt - Characters

in Win, one can use the
Alt + 3-digit numeric code
combination to spawn any ASCII character.

Linux, OTOH has
Ctrl-Shift-U + alphanumeric code
combination to spawn any UNICODE character.

bottom line: I'd like to be able to do what Win can do, please.
I was told it was possible, but made the mistake of not pressing on for an answer.

Graphical applications using the GTK library have that feature. It's not a 'linux' feature per-se. If it works, use it, that's what it's there for, you'll have a hard time making it do what you want otherwise.

The alt-number trick is an ancient thing from the days when everyone used ASCII and QDOS.

thank you again..

I must say I'm disappointed that this isn't supported by Linux by default..
hmm should I write Torvalds about this?
funny it may sound, but I'd actually do it.
it's a nice extra functionality, and I'm sure I'm not the only one missing it.

Would you write to the board of directors of Kawasaki too, just because their Ninja doesn't behave like you're used to from your Ford Explorer?

Can there be alt-texts to icons?

Can you add hover texts (alt-texts) to icons? It is not always obvious what each of them mean just by looking at them. Sometimes it is clear from the url it points to, but for accessibility reasons alone it would be good to have alt-texts as a standard. (1 Reply)
