I'm a newbie to unix so I don't really understand some parts of your answer to mu questions, hence the following questions

QUESTION1: What is x86?
QUESTION2:Also what do you mean by the following:

"the x86 media only works on x86 machines"?

QUESTION3: Does that mean even if I get x86, it would not work on my ultra 5 box?

You stated that you have "the disk pack for SOLARIS 8 Media INTEL PLATFORM EDITION". That is for loading Solaris on a P.C., not a system made by Sun. Sun makes systems with a SPARC processor. You cannot load the INTEL platform edition on the system you have. You can load it on a P.C.

The Intel supported OS of Solaris is usually called x86.

You need to get the SPARC Platform edition of Solaris 8. You should try downloading it from Sun at sun.com - downloads - I don't know if it's free or not, or if it can still be downloaded.
