remove whitespace
I combined 2 files using the paste command. It gave me something like this:

123445 ,AABBNN
22344 ,BBVVMM


I want to remove the whitespace between the end of string 1 and the comma (there is more blank space than my post is showing). Would I use the tr command for this?

you could use 'tr' if you're sure you don't have OTHER 'spaces' anywhere else.
Or else:

echo '123445 ,AABBNN' | sed 's#^\([^ ][^ ]*\)[ ]*,#\1,#'

I got this from another area of the forum (I looked first but not good enough). This is what I needed.

sed -e 's/[ ]*,[ ]*/,/g' -e 's/^[ ]*//' -e 's/[ ]*$//' file1
