set prompt in sh
hi, this < setprompt 'set prompt="[`hostname`:$cwd]# "' > is set in C shell. what is the equivalent in sh?

this will do the same job in sh

PS1=`uname -n`# ; export PS1

or

PS1=`uname -n`:'$PWD'# ; export PS1

the can be placed in your .profile

either of the two commands will give me a PWD at the prompt. what is wrong?

i did a echo $SHELL , and it gives me a sh. is this a bourne shell?

my prompt.
Here is what I have for HPUX

PS1="`hostname`-$LOGNAME:\${PWD#*}
# "

This is intended to be 2 lines it gives this look.

myhost-root:/
#
# 5

HELP!!!

i am on sun5.8 with shell being /sbin/sh
i vi .profile to add PS1=`uname -n`:'$PWD'# ; export PS1

but when i cd directory, the pwd is not displayed..
the output is below

root@myserver #cd oracle
root@myserver #pwd
/oracle
root@myserver #
yls177

Try this then ...

PS1="\u@\h:\w# "

Works on my sh (and bash).

nope, it doesn work
i have put this PS1="\u@\h:\w# " in my .profile.
what it came up at the prompt is \u@\h:\w#

Unable to Set Prompt to current working DIR

HPUX does not recognise \h,\w,\u to display the hostname,working directory and username respectively. So how do i set the PS1 variable to display my current working Directory as my prompt? I also tried PS1=$PWD, But it keeps showing the same directory path as prompt which PWD was holding at... (3 Replies)

CWD in prompt only showing the directory when set

Hi Gurus, I am working in tcsh and i set the prompt with this. set prompt = "$cwd>" But I see teh prompt only gets reflected with the directory where I set the prompt. After i cd to another directory it still shows the old directory. Please advise (1 Reply)

ok, there is a way to nicely kill a suspended job and to terminate another without using the mass -KILL command. also, how can I set my prompt temporarly without using the .bash_profile that uses the PS1. Thanks:) (1 Reply)
