UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hello fellas or ladies.
I am new on this site and new to the unix operating system. I have been working with UNIX and i love it so far, i learned some stuff and most of the beneficiary command but I need help renaming all the files in my directory and doing them one by one is just tiring. is there a script that can rename the files interactively to any name of my choice when i run the script. any help is appreciated

i am running SH btw

go to directory in which you want to rename files and try this:

for i in `ls `
do
mv $i newname_$i
done

newname-can be replaced with any text.

This is to rename all files in that directory, if you want to rename specific files then try "ls *name*" in the for loop.

so where in that script do i type the "ls *name*"

You do not use ls like that. Not only is it unnecessary, but it will break your script if any filenames contain spaces.
