Can any one please describe why I am not able to run any built-in commands in current shell?

Thanks.

Do you mind giving a bit more info like which shell, commands you use and which errors you get?

For running in current shell, I issued the command in this way,
. /usr/bin/ls
or
source ls

You cannot source /usr/bin/ls unless you have replaced the /usr/bin/ls executable with a shell script. It is a standalone executable.

What shell are you using?

I am using ksh.

Then Why cann't I run the command using . /bin/ls?

Because sourcing an executable i.e. /bin/ls is not supported by any shell that I know of. You can only source a shell script.

Shell builtins and sourcing a shell script are two different things. To see the list of builtins available for your particular version of ksh simply type "builtin" at the shell prompt.
