UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi all
I noted something strange on my server. The get mesages on my terminal even when I am not logged on. What does this mean? I don;t remember the excact message but it looked like messages from my /var/log/messages. "Can't locate mod probe!" or something like that. I am trying to get the exact messages form the log files but I don't know where to look for tty messages. I guessed it would be /var/log/messages but that did not seem to have the messages I saw.

Please advice!!

i get "cannont locate mod probe" messages also. however, everything on my system is running fine. certain systems i think will output system messages to either all tty's or just tty1 or tty7 .....etc. on my netbsd server whenever i SU from a telnet session, or from the console it will out put this message to tty1, aswell as logging it in /var/log/messages. if your system is running fine i wouldnt worry too much about it. though if i am wrong about this anyone else please correct me! hah cause then i should have a problem aswell.

That's set in your syslog.conf file - it's in the /etc directory if you have a Linux box. Look for entries sent to "console".

If it's modprobe looking for a module that doesn't exist, it may be caused by anything from KDE trying to use sound drivers on a system with no sound support to an invalid filesystem type when mounting.

I usually only send *.emerg and *.crit to console, and just review the logs at a later time.

I noticed that my system logger was down for some reason...
I restarted and hope that things will be ok. I am curious though as to what happenned?! Should i remain paranoid? It's not good for my temprament though

The /etc/syslog.conf file has kern.* directed to /dev/console
