You seem to be csh. That output did not come from either ksh or bash. Nor from even the old sh. All three of those would have the prompt in a variable called "PS1". The variable called "prompt" is used by csh and the extention to it called tcsh.

in csh .. edit .cshrc and put all the contents of .profile into it.. it should work this way ..

Yes you can use set or setenv but not "export" in csh.
Also in your home directory use..
. ./.cshrc This hsould set all variables...
