Hi.

One method:
Code:
#!/bin/sh -

# @(#) s1       Demonstrate string elimination, sed

echo
echo "(Versions displayed with local utility \"version\")"
version >/dev/null 2>&1 && version "=o" $(_eat $0 $1) sed
set -o nounset
echo

FILE=${1-data1}

echo " Data file $FILE:"
cat $FILE

echo
echo " Results:"
sed -e 's/FastEthernet//g' -e 's/[|]//g' $FILE

exit 0

Producing:
Code:
% ./s1

(Versions displayed with local utility "version")
Linux 2.6.11-x1
GNU bash, version 2.05b.0(1)-release (i386-pc-linux-gnu)
GNU sed version 4.1.2

 Data file data1:
FastEthernet0/9,|FastEthernet0/10,|FastEthernet0/11,FastEthernet0/13|,FastEthernet0/12,FastEthernet0/24

 Results:
0/9,0/10,0/11,0/13,0/12,0/24

See man sed for details ... cheers, drl
