Can anyone tell me how to install Suse Linux 8.1?

You need to partition your windows hard drive with a program for windows such as partition magic, clear around 3-10 gigs or so. Then, once you clear the space for it, pop disk one of the SuSe pack in and reboot you computer, the computer should boot off of the cd and take you into an interactive setup, the setup program will walk you through the rest of the way.

Not as simple as telling you how to install Linux as that.

Is your hardware supported by Linux? (Should be but always nice to check it out first)

Did you download this or buy it? If you bought it they come with instructions. If you downloaded it you can get instructions from the web.

Have you ever installed Linux or played with Linux before?

Depending on the answer for the above question. If yes, Well do you want to dual boot? partition a HDD? Do you know how to configure the lilo? Is it to be a single boot?


I'm not saying you wasted your time asking the question or that Linux is so hard to use, it's easy and nice when you know how. Also fun

We need more details with your question though to help and give the best answer for you. Like do you want help installing Linux from scratch? Or are you just having some problems at some stage of the install? Hardware Specs may be needed to help solve the question.

um...short answer...long answer...'s all good.

i did it by burning the iso boot image to cd, and then did ftp install, took a while but now my system runs great.

well heres what i did:

HDA1 = Windows 98

HDB1 = Linux

i have two hard drives.I installed on hdb1 (second hd) and installed lilo onto hdb. I then installed a boot loader ( OSL2000 boot loader)and setup my bios to boot from hdb (second hd) first and hda second.It should work then !

This is only if you have two Hard drives

I advise to be careful when building disk partitions and realize that when you have a failure or crash and have to fsck the filesystem, that giant partitions take A LONG TIME to check and repair.

So, consider carefully building a reasonable size root partition so you don't have to wait forever when the file system need repair.
