Some places to start:
  • Verify that sendmail is running
  • Verify that sendmail is correctly configured. Depending on your network configuration, you may need to use a "smart-relay" to send all your mail, consult with your network administrator
  • Check that your firewall is not blocking mail connections. See #2 above, if necessary.
  • Check log files for any error messages.

Hope that helps.

Quote:
a user can't send or receive email
If it is just one person who cannot send and receive email on a server that others CAN send and recieve email, then you need to concentrate at looking at what is different about that person's account.

First you should look for problems with how the account is set up and then move on to the following:

Explain how your email works:
Do you have a centralized email host where all email is sent and then distributed from?
Is this local email to your LAN or to the Internet?
What MTA are you using (Sendmail is installed by default on most Solaris 2.6 distributions)?

Show any error messages from /var/adm/messages or from the terminal window when the user attempts to send mail.

Network sendmail

I am having the same problem. I tried to send email from a UNIX box I configured to my e-mail ( both company's and yahoo ), but I got " User unknown" error and then my mail was saved to a dead.letter. I checked my sendmail.cf file, didn't find anything wrong. Can someone tell me what's the important parameters I need to check? How come my mail couldn't go out? I restarted sendmail after changed the configuration file.

I checked many places, but couldn't find any clue.

Thanks a lot!

b5fnpct,

Please start a new thread with your problem - adding in "I'm having the same problem" doesn't help solve the original and doesn't give everyone a chance to help both parties. Insure you put what OS and verison you are running along with output from the following:

/usr/lib/sendmail -d0.1 -bt < /dev/null

Thanks.
