I've seen them clear themselves, that is they disappear from "top". Does that mean that the parent has started up again and started the zombie child up?

When you say they disappear from top that doesn't necessarily mean they have died. That only means that they are not using up enough resources to be in the top list.

On my version there is a "j" option that allows you to page down, but I don't know if it would let you page to the bottom, since it refreshes at some interval and returns to the top of top.

If you know the PID or process name. I would grep it out of the proc list.

ps -aef |grep proc

Hello I try to googled it , but I dint get sufficient answer :( .. When I can see zombie running on server do they consume system resources or not ? I have read that is not good to kill them with signal 9 cause it might cause more troubles .. why is kill -9 so harmfull? thanks (2 Replies)
