tar not working in HP unix

Hi ,

I want to tar a directory and then ZIP it. I am using HP unix. I want to tar the directory such that the original directory should be there .

When i tried to use

tar -cvf . My system is showing error

(>) tar -cvf test_per
tar: usage tar [-]{txruc}[eONvVwAfblhm{op}][0-7[lmh]] [tapefile] [blocksize] [[-C directory] file] ...
(>) tar -c test_per
tar: cannot open /dev/rmt/0m

Please let me know how to do that in HP unix

Let explain:
Quote:
(>) tar -cvf test_per
tar: usage tar [-]{txruc}[eONvVwAfblhm{op}][0-7[lmh]] [tapefile] [blocksize] [[-C directory] file] ...
the tar is to destination test_per but of what?
Quote:
(>) tar -c test_per
tar: cannot open /dev/rmt/0m
Here you are archiving test_per but default destination doesnt exist...

I wonder if you were not trying to do:
Code:
tar -cvf test_per ./directory

which is "archive for me in output file test_per the content of ./directory"

Wow time to go to bed...
