AWK Pipe (truncate last few lines from file)

Hello,

does anybody have a clue why the following code isn't working in csh:
Code:
awk 'END{print FNR-5}' x.log | awk 'FNR<$1' x.log > x2.log

I want to remove the last 5 lines of a file without using a variable.

Thanks Tim

Code:
#  awk '{t[NR]=$0}END{for (x=1;x<NR-4;x++){print t[x]}}' infile

should do you.

Suppose x.log contained 12 lines. The first awk command outputs 7 as expected. You were then just piping '7' (which is meaningless) to the second awk command i.e.
Code:
7 | awk 'FNR<$1' x.log > x2.log

The second problem is the use of $1 within single quotes. $1 is first of all meaningless in this context since you have no command line arguments and will never be expanded since it is enclosed within single quotes.
