Different ip addresses

Hello! I have logged in using Putty into another machine 'tele'. The ip address which i used to login to 'tele' is 192.168.1.3. Now while at 'tele' when i run "#ifconfig -a" i get the same ip address i.e, 192.168.1.3. But when i run "#arp tele" it gives the output:

tele (10.143.128.8)

Why it is so? Why the same machine is displaying two ips. My own ip address is 192.168.1.38. Could anyone please help. Thanks

It's possible there is another tele on the network. But more probably, ifconfig -a shows multiple IP addresses, including the 192.x and 127.0.0.1 addresses. Are you sure there isn't anything else there? From the "tele" host, what happens if you then telnet/ssh into 10.143.128.8?

Check your /etc/hosts file. It could be that the hostname "tele" is misconfigured.
