Using telnet with sshd like that is only useful to get the banner. You need an ssh client.

sshd_config is probably in /usr/local/etc for Solaris 8. There is a line:
PermitRootLogin no
you will need to change that to "yes".

When you were editing /a/etc/passwd and /a/etc/shadow, you could have added another user for yourself. But if /etc/nologin exists, only root can login. Remove /a/etc/nologin if it exists the next time you boot from cd.

What is solve my problem was the change in:

# vi /etc/default/login

CONSOLE=/dev/console

is the line you are looking for and you would want to put a # sign in front of it.

#CONSOLE=/dev/console

By doing that it enabled me to access the server using telnet and from there i changed the password..
