scp -r and "?" folder

Hi,

I am using scp command to backup files and copy the entire directory from the remote server to backup folder on my local machine. Please see the command below:

scp -r -p elenaa@host:../../folder1/folder2/ ./backup/

Everything transfers just fine however after the transfer is done a "?" folder is created as a subfolder of backup and I cant access or rename it. And everything that i transfer from my host is in "?" folder. So is there something that I am doing wrong or am I missing something. Please help. Thanks a lot!

******************************************

host:/app/elenaa/backup>ls -l
total 4
drwxrwsr-x 30 elenaa app 4096 Oct 1 12:32 ?

scp -p will preserve ownerships based on the group numbers on the remote box.
So if you are are group 100 on your home unix box and group 101 on the remote box, the new files will belong to uid=101. Which means you cannot do anything with them.

See what the output of the id command is on each box. I do not know what the behavior of scp is like when the uid's don't match, but I'm guessing that is the problem.

Jim,

I dont really need -p when I transfer files, I tried without -p and I still get the "?" folder...

Thanks!
