Hi Franklin,
Ok, I understand now. It still is not working though. It instead deletes all of the data that looks like this: MSH|^~\&|IC527| Lawson|sr_islawson|DBS|200809300822||MFN^MUP|200809300822000001|P|2.1|000001|

Except for the first one in the file. The above line has a CR LF CR at the end of it, which translate to 0D 0A 0D. The spaces are also not being removed.

Your code did not work also. I need it to delete only the spaces after it encounters a CR "0D" untill it gets to the next spot where data starts again. If you look at my sample data above you will see what I mean. Thank you both of you for your help.

Another approach is to remove the cr's first and then the spaces from the begin of a line until a non space:

sed -e 's/^M//' -e 's/[ ]*//' ic527.txt > ic527.new

I was finally able to figure it out with your help. Here is what I came up with:

sed 's/  //g' ic527.txt | sed 's/^M /^M/g' > ic527.new
