UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi,
I am new to Unix. I have written a script in Unix. I wanted to schedule this script in cronjobs which has to be run daily at 10AM.
Already i have some cron jobs running on my unix server. In addition to these I have to edit the crontab. I know I have to execute the command "crontab -e" to edit my existing crontab.
After execution of this command it opens a VI editor, I have typed the line

* 10 * * * /export/config/run_process.ksh

in my existing crontab. But i do no how to save this crontab without modifying the existing cronjobs.
Can some one help me how to edit the crontab and save it back to the system?

crontab -e would open the file in vi editor showing all the previous entries.Simply insert your line at the end of file and save the file using ":x" command.

Can you please tell me that whether by default cron jobs sends an email to the user account executing the cronjob. If so can you please tell me how to disable it?

Crontab does not send a mail by default, unless you have specified it in your crontab file.

Check if your crontab file contains, MAILTO parameter or a mails -s word.

To disable simply remove those from your file.

Nope, by default the output of a command or a script, will be email to your local email account.
To prefent that you can place this line at the top of the crontab:

or redirect the output to /dev/null:

be careful with this, as it will run the script every minute between 10:00 and 10:59. I guess you probably want

to only run it once at 10:00
