trying to modify dir as a file

If a dir is treated in unix as a file. can it be modified by using text editor or some other way?
When I tried to edit it, i get this error.
Error : E382: Cannot write, 'buftype' option is set

I am not sure if anyone does this in usual work. What should that be good for? There are commands to change the status of directories.
