Pasting text in VI editor from a different editor

Hi,

I knw its a silly question, but am a newbie to 'vi' editor. I'm forced to use this, hence kindly help me with this question.

How can i paste a chunk 'copied from' a different editor(gedit) in 'vi editor'?
As i see, p & P options does work only within 'vi'.

If you are using an X-Windows environment of some sort then middle-click usually pastes into a terminal session.

Sometimes shift-insert will do it too.

Yes, but Middle-click or shift-insert isn't working within 'vi' editor.
It works in gedit.

Are you in X-Windows? Or connected via SSH/PuTTY or similar? I'm not familiar with gedit... is it a GUI application? In other words... when you copy something to the clipboard from gedit... which clipboard is it going to?

am not sure of what u're asking. Gedit is a GUI based editor(like ur notepad in windows)

Okay, so I take it you are not in Windows... are you using VNC or something to connect to a remote server? Or are you directly in front of a PC running Linux with KDE or Gnome or something? And if that is the case, how are you running vi, in an xterm window? Or konsole? Maybe a screenshot would tell a thousand words... :-)
