Perhaps we should ask if arrays are desired. To assign a string with embedded whitespace to a variable, one needs quotes:

var3="why is this so hard"

I usually use quotes anyway -- in addition to protecting the whitespace, it emphasizes the fact that it is a string. It's a habit that can help with other languages as well.

One would then almost always use quotes when dereferencing the variable, say to pass the content along to another program or script:

some-command-of-interest "$var3"
