OK - I run Centos 5.2 on some of my servers which is a "licence free" version of RH5. Problems have been reported with this NIC see 0002930: RTL8111/8168B network card does not work - CentOS Bug Tracker.

Unless you have a specific reason for choosing RH5 I suggest another distro as previously recommended.

Thanks MickZA

Hi MickZA,

Thanks for finding the problem. I just bought this NEW HP PC. Also I paid $80 to Redhat for one year support. Redhat support could not find the connectivity problem so I had to post it in this forum.

Should I request the PC vendor to have another NIC card installed? Do you suggest any other compatible NIC card?

Thanks so much. Is it possible I contact you in your personal email address. Mine is: kuberacupidagra@yahoo.com

Best Regards,

Anil

Glad I could help.

Given your investment in RH support I assume you going for RHCE and need your box to work, an inexpensive Realtek 10/100 PCI NIC should work fine (giving you 2 NICs but you won't activate the RTL8111 under linux).

Just visit the forum if you need more assistance.

Added new D-Link NIC Card

Hello All,

I bought a new D-LINK DGE-530T NIC Card. The document for the NIC Card says that it is compatible with Linux 6 and later.

I installed it on my PC. As before it works fine with Vista.

With RedHat Linux I do the following:

1) Device Tab -- Add button
2) Select Ethernet Device -- I say Other Ethernet Card
3) I get a pull down menu with NIC cards from 3COM down but no DGE-530T. I do have D-Link DE-600 Ethenet pocket adaptor.

What do I do now?

Will look forward to your advice.

Anil

What it says is that driver version 6.10 is compatible with Linux kernal (sic) 2.4.18 and newer. D-Link DGE-530T 10/100/1000 Gigabit Desktop PCI Adapter You might want to see if you can install the driver they offer for download, although there is probably a reasonable open-source driver which works as well. The manufacturers are not good about documenting which chipsets etc they use, so it's hard to say which driver would be right for this card. Again, do you get anything in /var/log/dmesg to identify the card and/or a suitable driver? What does lspci return for this card?
