UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Dear guys ,

I have Sun mail server ( unix 5.7 ) , I configured the sendmail on it , and it is working fine .

i was checking ( smtp and pop ) on it .
for smtp , i telnet IP address of server on port 25 and i got a reply .

for pop , i telnet IP of server on port 110 and i got the follwoing message :

telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused .

the problem that i created a user on the mail server and i sent him an email , but he can not download the email .

thru. outlook express he got follwoing error message :

" Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'xyz', Server: 'x.y.z.c', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F " .

can anyone help ASAP plz !!

Please look at your process table (using ps -aux , or something like that on your OS) and see if a pop server is running. Alternatively, you can look at the output of netstat -a and see if there is a pop server listening on port 110.

the pop service is not working ( even though the sendmail is working ) .

how can i make pop service work ??

i need to check the emails of the user i created on the server ?
