The explanation was a little bit off in that it re-splits the first part, b[0], into array a. Otherwise, another nice solution based on the presumed separation in the file.

Hi.

This is a little shorter than the perl solution:
Code:
#!/bin/bash -

# @(#) s1 Demonstrate split lines based on 8, 4 count spaces.

echo
echo "(Versions displayed with local utility \"version\")"
version >/dev/null 2>&1 && version "=o" $(_eat $0 $1) sed
set -o nounset
echo

FILE=${1-data1}

echo " Results:"
sed \
-e 's/$/\n/' \
-e 's/ /\n/' \
-e 's/ /\n/' \
$FILE

exit 0

Producing (with a sample of the results):
Code:
% ./s1

(Versions displayed with local utility "version")
Linux 2.6.11-x1
GNU bash 2.05b.0
GNU sed version 4.1.2

 Results:
Aberdeen Centre [Blks A-U & CP]
Aberdeen
The Ming An Ins Co (HK) Ltd

Academic Terrace [Towers 1-3]
"101 Pokfulam Road, HK"
Zurich Insurance Co Ltd

Academic Terrace [Car Park Portion]
"102 Pokfulam Road, HK"
Concord Insurance Co Ltd

   ...

Belvedere Garden (Phase 3) [PH03 Blks 1-7 & CP]
Tsuen Wan
The Ming An Ins Co (HK) Ltd

"Beneville [Blks 1-3, 5 & CP]"
"18 Tuen Kwai Road, Tuen Mun"
Sun Hung Kai Properites Ins Ltd

Beverly Garden [Blks 1-10 & CP]
Tseung Kwan O
Allianz Insurance (HK) Ltd

The first substitution -- the one with the '$' -- may be removed; it is there for visual separation of the results ... cheers, drl

Hi drl,

I have tried both your perl and ksh script but it was not giving me the expected output. When I am running your both perl and ksh script the content of the file is splited as fields but it is not going for next line. For example:

The output what i am getting is when running the script is:

Yuk Ming Court [Blks A-C & CP] Tseung Kwan O Asia Insurance Co Ltd

Yuk Po Court [Blks A-H & CP] Sheung Shui "China BOCOM Insurance Co., Ltd."

Yukon Court [Blks & CP] 2-4 Conduit Road Concord Insurance Co Ltd

Yung Shing Court [Blks A-C & CP] Fanling ING General Insurance International

but i want output like:

Yuk Ming Court [Blks A-C & CP]
Tseung Kwan O
Asia Insurance Co Ltd

Yuk Po Court [Blks A-H & CP]
Sheung Shui
"China BOCOM Insurance Co., Ltd."

Yukon Court [Blks & CP]
2-4 Conduit Road
Concord Insurance Co Ltd

Yung Shing Court [Blks A-C & CP]
Fanling
ING General Insurance International

Please help me on this.
