Can anyone tell me how to get a unix os for free?
is there any particular site?

You can also download os for free from respective os sites.
redhat.com
opensuse.com
opensolaris.com
ubuntu.com
etc.

Linux is not UNIX but it is a "Unix-Like" system. Technically, Linux is just the kernel; the controlling part of the operating system that manages the system and its resources.

That being, hopefully, cleared up, You can download a Linux distribution to learn the basics of Linux and Unix.

Some good ones for people who are beginning would be:

CentOS or Fedora (Red Hat based)
OpenSUSE (SUSE based and my favorite)
Ubuntu/Kubuntu (Debian based)
PCLinuxOS (Mandriva Based)

I personally like OpenSuse for the hardware and software support, as well as ease of transition and use.

i have heard that the BSD families are more "true" to the old unix core
not that i think is a good thing, but you specified "unix"

UNIX problem? Unix programm runs windows 2000 CPU over 100%

Okee problems...!! What is happening: Unix server with some programms, workstations are windows 2000, the workstations work good but when you start a programm on the Unix server the CPU of the workstations go to 100% usage resulting that the system gets very slow.
