Multi line deletes

I would like to be able to delete the first n lines of a file from inside of a ksh script. I am not sure how to achieve this or if it is possible. Could someone please help. Thanks in advance.

Not the best way....but it will work - I leave the moving to tmp file and coping over the old to you. $1 would be a parameter passed to the script - you might want to change that, add error checking, ...

#!/bin/ksh
linecount=`wc -l /var/adm/messages|awk '{print $1}'`
echo $linecount
kill_lines=$(($linecount-$1))
tail -$kill_lines /var/adm/messages

How about just using sed?

sed "1,10 d" input_file > temp ; mv temp input_file

If you want 'n' to be set as a variable - for whatever reason you can use

sed "1,$n d" ....
