Question create directory named current date

Since this site solved my problems before, I am back for more (solutions)

I down load via a script every day a file that has the same name as the file of the day before. I want to move that file to its own directory like:
/archive/jul30

How do I capture the systems date in a script an create a directory using that date?

One of these should do it:

mkdir `date +%b%y`
(creates a directory Jul02)
mkdir `date +%b%Y`
(creates a directory Jul2002)
mkdir `date +%m%y`
(creates a directory 0702)
mkdir `date +%m%Y`
(creates a directory 072002)

Do you want the directory to have the system date as a name - or the system date less 1 day as a name? Handles differently you see.
