Print to file in UNIX
I ask this about a Tru64 system that I do not have access to...

Is it possible to use lpr to print to file?

Taking for granted that the default print in /etc/printcap has HP PCL filters, how can I create a PCL file from text?

depends on what you want the file for.

printing creates a spool file

If you are spooling /usr/var/spool/printername
you can stop the printer in unix using lpc

use your command to print to the printer

then nab the spool file.

I'm looking for a more automated process.

Is it possible to define a remote printer in printcap that points to a file location?
