can i just suggest something?
for practising, it can be good (if you don't have a unix setup yourself, or you just want to try a different "flavour") to get a shell account, and use a secure telnetting program to login to it. I have a couple of such accounts, and my favourite is Grex, at cyberspace.org (you get to choose between bash, korn, C shells et c, on a SunOS system, and they let you use lynx, and hundreds of other standard unix utilities, they also have a huge and thriving online bulletin board for members)
Go and set up an account there, and you can telnet in using ssh or similar program. I use PuTtyTel for windows and NiftyTelnet on a mac, when i'm not running linux.
hope i'm not just mouthing off here and that this is actually relevant!
