newbie Help configuring Fedora as a proxy using SQUID

I am an intern at a company which requires me to configure Fedora 8 as a proxy server for the network. I am only supposed to test it and practice configuring it. Now, I installed fedora, and SQUID is running properly on it. Now, about the configuration, I know it has to be done by the file "squid.conf" . Now this computer is attached to my work network which gives me DHCP connectivity to the Internet. My question is should I set my computer as static? I basically just want to try SQUID out, sort of like a project for me, as an intern. I have seen many tutorials and sample configuration. i want to do the same, so should I just set this whole thing as Static ? How do you recommend me to set this up ? Please HELP!!!

You can test SQUID out using the server itself. By default SQUID listens on port 3128 so you can configure your browser on the proxy server to use 127.0.0.1 with port 3128.

To use it as a proxy server for the rest of your network, you will need to modify the conf file to set the ACL to permit only your LAN subnet. The .conf file is well documented.

I would create a DHCP reservation for the proxy server. Your sys admin should be able to help you out. A static IP address would work as well.
