UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi friends..

I have succesfully installed SCO Unixware 711 on a Compaq server.

However today, with no apparant reason my GUI has stopped working. Whenever I log in through the GUI, I firstly get the white SCO Unix screen follwed by a black screen with just the mouse pinter.

No SCOUNIXWARE desktop.

The problem started when I changed 3 kernel parameters, rebuilt and rebooted :

MSGMNI 1024
SFNOLIM 250
FLCKREC 1000


Can anyone please tell me how I can troubleshoot problems starting the GUI?

Edit /usr/lib/X11/sclogin/Xservers. You'll see the line:

:0 local /usr/bin/X11/X :0 -crt /dev/tty02

Change tty02 to other then the located.

If the "SCO Logon" graphical screen appears, but things get screwy after you login, try this: after entering your password, press F1 instead of ENTER. This "failsafe" login will startup one Xterm and no other clients. You can start other clients from there (for instance, type "netscape & ") and examine the /usr/lib/X11/scologin/Xerrors log file to perhaps figure out what is going wrong. To exit, just CTRL-D or "exit" the Xterm.
