using grep
how do I use grep to list words by the number of characters in the word? anyone know of a useful website on using grep?

thanks, i'm looking for something a little more advanced. i want to search and list words that start with "b" for exampe. also, how do i use grep to list words of a certain number of characters?

use ebookshare.net, and look for the script books:
this one is very good: Linux shell Scripting with bash (2004) u can find the usage of grep, with other etc..
Oreilly Python scripting is also good choice for beginners
(or use mininova for unix books search)

For grepping all lines starting with "d", do

grep "^d" <filename> (enter)

If you want to look for all the directories at a specific location, you may do:

ls -l |grep "^d"

just giving you few ideas to start with...

More precisely, if you want to find words starting with b and having a total of 5 characters:
