Macintosh-2:$ sed --version
sed: illegal option -- -
usage: sed script [-Ealn] [-i extension] [file ...]
sed [-Ealn] [-i extension] [-e script] ... [-f script_file] ... [file ...]


When I do man sed, it has this in there:
Quote:
(The letter ell.) Write the pattern space to the standard output
in a visually unambiguous form. This form is as follows:

backslash \\
alert \a
form-feed \f
carriage-return \r
tab \t
vertical tab \v
I don't get why it doesn't work....

Oh, okay - got it!

sed "s/,/"$'\t'/g test

works like a charm!

Secondary question...

any advice on how I could specify which columns to print, upon converting a csv to a tsv? Like if I only wanted the first three columns of the tab-separated value to print?

Thank you Franklin, works perfectly. Some csv files have quotes around the fields (e.g. "one","two","three","four") - how can I use awk to remove these upon printing as tsv?

To remove the double quotes with the above script:

awk 'BEGIN{OFS="\t"}{gsub("\"","");print $1,$2,$3}'  file

Thank you sir. I ended up with:
awk '{gsub(/,/, "\t")gsub("\"","");print}NR==3{exit 0}' test

using your scripts as a basis for getting this figured out. Thank you so much.

Converting csv to xls

Hi, Can anyone tell the option to change the file type in unix. i.e. if a file is in csv(Comma Separating Values) format, it should be changed to xls(ordinary MS-Excel) format. But renaming command is not changing to correct file format. Thanks in advance, Milton. (1 Reply)
