Code:
awk '{if(NR%2!=0) print $1}' filename> oddrecs.dat; awk '{if(NR%2==0) print $1}' filename> evenrecs.dat; paste oddrecs.dat evenrecs.dat

There may be more efficient methods!

Another approach:

Code:
awk 'NR%2{s=$0;next}{print s, $0}' file

Another solution in shell script

Code:
EVEN_LINE=0
while read line
do
  if [ $EVEN_LINE -eq 1 ]
  then
   echo $ODD_VAL $line
   EVEN_LINE=0
  else
   ODD_VAL=$line
   EVEN_LINE=1
  fi
done<tempfile
if [ $EVEN_LINE -eq 1 ]
then
 tail -1 tempfile
fi

Good one. But, this may leave out the last record if the total nr of records in the file is an odd number.

In that case:

Code:
awk 'NR%2{s=$0;next}{print s, $0}END{if(NR%2)print s}' file

Code:
nawk 'ORS=(FNR%2)?FS:RS'  file
