Which UNIX?

Hello UNIX users.
I am planning to do some work at a *NIX based system and I'v been told to install Debian. But I am a total dummy when it comes to NIX and what confuses me the most is the great number of NIX based systems. Can someone explain why there are so many of them and what are they specialized for?
I guess what I am asking for is a one-sentence-for-each-NIX-based-operating-system reply.
Thanks.

That's a pretty broad question. There are entire slabs of the Internet which are dedicated to fierce debate on this topic.

The strengths of Debian in particular are broad range of hardware support (an incredible range of platforms, from handhelds to big dinosaur iron) and a pretty nice package-management system. The somewhat centralized packaging model also means that if you install package foo, you will have the same foo as everybody else.

but there is no answer... or the answer would be much to long... start with a linux/unix of your choice (maybe ubuntu is a good beginning) and gain experience. after that you can make your own desicions which linux/unix is good for you or for your needs...

For a beginner, the main thing is probably to be able to get help when you need it. You can begin to learn the differences to other Unices when you know the basics. I'd concur that Ubuntu would be a good choice, also for a Debian-oriented job, because it's derived from Debian, is geared towards non-technical users, and has a very solid user base, with active help forums and -- should you require it -- commercial support.

You dont really have to worry about which of which to use, they're all nearly the same with some 'custom' modifications. Just pick one that is easy to install and it'll be just fine, trust me! Smilie

As for the question why there are so many, ask the free market talibans (and scold them about that Windows monopoly issue, while you're at it).
