awk works... I can do wonders

Thanks, I was trying to do this as a two step process, but actually with these commands I can make it one step. My ultimate goal here was to compare two 'FIELDS' that were originally in the same file.

In that case, you might want awk to do the compare, instead of just pulling the fields into another file. awk could then take appropriate action based on whether the fields were the same or different.
Code:
#!/bin/sh
awk '\
{if ($1==$NF)
    print "SAME:", $1
 else
    print "DIFF:", $1, $NF
}' myfile
exit 0

Way cool... I really appreciate it.

In the spirit of "There is more than one way to do it" here is the a Perl sample for the same results...

Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl

while ($inputLine = <>) {
  my @values = split(/ /, $inputLine);
  print "$values[$#values]";
};

Sample in use:

Code:
OpenBSD:joeuser:/home/joeuser/sample $ lastword.pl < source.txt
