UNIX Hardware Recommendations pls
Hello,

I'm a Computer Engineering student at Portland State University and am seriously trying to broaden my horizons in UNIX. My goal is to eventually become an excellent sys admin, but alas...I'm just starting off on this path. I am relatively new (though not unexposed) to UNIX and struggling with some routine newbie decisions. The question regarding books and texts is well covered by earlier threads, THANKS! The most difficult for me, however, is the question of system purchase. What type of box should I buy? If networking is the heart and soul of UNIX should I buy a couple used blade 100's to learn on/play with? Will these be powerful enough?

There are a lot of options out there, and a pair of Blade 100's would be an excellent one. They are quite powerful, and use IDE disk drives and PC RAM. Another option would be to use PC hardware and Linux, FreeBSD or Solaris x86. I am biased towards Solaris as that is what I work on. The most well rounded path might be to purchase a Blade to learn the Sparc hardware, and build a PC to learn the PC hardware and Solaris x86 differences.
