For me it works even on 5.8. which shell are U using I've testet with ksh and bash

what about
#printf "%s\n%s\n" hello world
# 9

Post the output of these commands:

echo $SHELL
which echo
uname -a

Your probably using c-shell and it is using it's own built in echo sub-command.

Try this:

/bin/echo "Message from bac logistics\nThe Confirmation File has not been received."

HOME:~ % /bin/echo "Message from bac logistics\nThe Confirmation File has not been received."
Message from bac logistics
The Confirmation File has not been received.
